The low down on our November 2019 Wales Regional Meeting
We hear from Jeanette, Wales Regional Rep about the most recent regional meeting held at Swansea University
At the recent Wales regional meeting at Swansea University on the 28th November we had two great presentations from Jacqui McPeake – JACS Ltd on How to support students with food allergies living away from home and the second from Lee Rawlinson – Kinetic on Student Wellbeing.
Jacqui’s presentation explored some of the issues facing students with allergies whilst away from home. This included unfamiliarity with menus, new peer groups and not having parents around who would often check food labels, cook and shop for them. 15-24-year olds are the most at-risk group of people with allergies. Jacqui introduced the group to the PURPLE way of approach for university catering departments to students with allergies (Policy, Understanding, Risk assessment, Procedure, Legal & Engagement). Finally, there were some useful tips on how university catering establishments can help students with allergies as well as how students can help themselves manage their allergies and remain well.
Lee’s presentation looked at how today’s students have grown up in the digital age with technology moving so incredibly fast, that the challenge of getting students out of their rooms and engaged is becoming a problem. The rise in anti-social media and feelings of isolation is now apparent in student populations. There is a marked increase in the number of students accessing student services and counselling services. Kinetic are working on a project to have one cloud-based system to replace multiple systems and paperwork with interactions and inputs from different departments within the university, such as student services, residential services and teaching. There are already some universities signed up to help contribute to the development of the new system but are looking for more volunteers from Wales to help with the development.
We also had very comprehensive discussions about various operational activities from contract cleaners to conducting water runs in empty rooms etc. This part of the meeting is always interesting and hugely beneficial to all that attend to share best practise.
Even the local wildlife were keen to join in ASRA discussions!
