South West Representative Paul Sloggett
Administration and Systems Manager, UWE Bristol (University of the West of England)
What do you enjoy most about working in student accommodation?
The energy that students bring to campus, the sheer variety of enquiries and incidents to deal with, and the amazing dedication and strength of my amazing team!
Can you provide details about a specific student accommodation project that you’ve been involved in, that you’re really proud of?
I’m lucky in that I’ve worked as part of the Security Team, as an Accommodation Manager, and now as the Admin & Systems Manager. I’ve been involved in (and lead on) lots of different projects and initiatives from planning new builds to purchasing pest control! The thing that I’m really most proud of is the positive changes I’ve shaped when handling behavioural disciplinary incidents and then creating the University’s policies around this.
What does ASRA mean to you?
Sharing of best practice and learning from the people on the ground who make the real difference! The training sessions on offer are always top quality and the power of this network is huge.
What is your best ASRA memory?
Hard to pick just one! The Rainbow Ball in Belfast in 2016 was fantastic (all 3 of the Gala events I’ve attended have been great) and the night out on the pier in Brighton 2017 was really fun. In terms of the sessions I’ve been on I took great value from the Unconscious Bias training by Laurence Harvey in Birmingham 2018. Another highlight was the Southwest Regional meeting in 2017 where Salam Katbi, the ‘Prevent’ Regional HE/FE Co-ordinator delivered a very powerful session on ‘The importance of Prevent in Combatting Radicalisation and Terrorism’. This in itself reflects the broad range of opportunities that ASRA provides
